The latest report from the Advisory Science Council published on the 15th December 2009 details the contribution of PhDs to industry. Among the findings was that while only 29 per cent of R&D firms employed PhD researchers in 2007, these companies accounted for 70 per cent of business expenditure on research and development. The iPhone has captured significant mindshare since its launch in 2007, and in particular the application development model and the iTunes App Store, which has had over two billion downloads of over 100,000 applications.
There has been a move from games and other ‘fun’ applications to software companies looking to add mobile channels for their products. Enterprise focused companies like Intuition are developing iPhone applications in order to add to the value of their core product or service.
